NEW YORK, June 4 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks on the move on Thursday:
JOHNSON & JOHNSON (JNJ.N)
The company said it was "very optimistic" about the future of its pharmaceutical unit and detailed plans to address five therapeutic areas. [ID:nN0493662]
Shares of the Dow component slid 0.8 percent to $55.70.
WAL-MART STORES INC (WMT.N)
The discount retailer said it would add more than 22,000 jobs in its U.S. namesake stores in 2009, pointing to lower growth compared with this year. [ID:nN03123661]
Shares slid 0.1 percent to $50.81.
FIFTH THIRD BANCORP (FITB.O)
The bank expects to more than fill a $1.1 billion capital shortfall found by U.S. regulators. It also said it would focus on repaying federal bailout money.
The bank sold $1 billion of common stock, $250 million more than planned, at an average $6.33 per share. It said this sale, plus other actions available to it, could generate an additional $2 billion of Tier 1 common equity. [ID:nN04212234]
The stock rose 8.4 percent to $7.06.
COSTCO WHOLESALE CORP (COST.O)
The retailer reported a drop of 7 percent in its May same-store sales when fuel is included. Comparable sales were up 1 percent excluding fuel. [ID:nBNG109510]
Shares fell 1.7 percent to $47.67.
AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS INC (AEO.N)
The retailer reported a drop of 7 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6602]
Shares fell 1 percent to $15.04.
AEROPOSTALE INC (ARO.N)
The retailer reported an increase of 19 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6629]
Shares were flat at $36.61.
GAP INC (GPS.N)
The retailer reported a drop of 6 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6611]
Shares sank 7.5 percent to $16.86.
SAKS INC (SKS.N)
The luxury retailer reported a drop of 26.6 percent in May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6646]
Shares fell 0.7 percent to $4.02.
THE BUCKLE INC (BKE.N)
The retailer reported an increase of 13.4 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6559]
Shares fell 2.7 percent to $35.11.
TJX COMPANIES INC (TJX.N)
The company forecast a drop of 3 percent to 5 percent in its June same-store sales. [ID:nWEN0057]
Shares fell 1 percent to $30.42.
ROSS STORES INC (ROST.O)
The retailer reported an increase of 4 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6653]
Shares fell 3.4 percent to $38.71.
ABERCROMBIE & FITCH CO (ANF.N)
The retailer reported a drop of 28 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6618]
Shares tumbled 10 percent to $28.41.
WET SEAL INC (WTSLA.O)
The retailer reported a drop of 8.4 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6557]
Shares rose 6.7 percent to $3.20.
TARGET CORP (TGT.N)
The company reported a drop of 6.1 percent in its May same-store sales. [ID:nWNAB6640]
Shares fell 1.2 percent to $40.46.
ANADYS PHARMACEUTICALS INC (ANDS.O)
The company said it would cut 40 percent of its work force and suspend the development of a drug being studied in hepatitis C and cancer. [ID:nBNG417562]
Shares sank 5.4 percent to $1.93.
TRAVELERS COS INC (TRV.N)
The insurance company raised its 2009 operating earnings outlook by 5 cents a share. [ID:nN04220433]
Shares rose 1.3 percent to $43.25.
SIGNET JEWELERS LTD (SIG.N)
The jewelry retailer reported first-quarter earnings that rose from the prior year, helped by cost cutting, and a drop of 7.3 percent in its quarterly sales. [ID:nN03457994]
Shares rose 2.4 percent to $19.85.
NOVAVAX INC (NVAX.O)
The company signed a deal with the National Institutes of Health to jointly evaluate a vaccine for the H1N1 flu virus. [ID:nBNG419542]
Shares surged 56 percent to $2.93.
WIND RIVER SYSTEMS (WIND.O)
INTEL CORP (INTC.O)
Shares of Wind River soared 44 percent to $11.51 after Intel said it would buy the company for about $884 million. [ID:nWNAB6613]
Shares of Intel, a Dow component, rose 0.6 percent to $16.02.
CIENA CORP (CIEN.O)
Shares rose 4.2 percent to $11.47 after the communications equipment maker reported a bigger-than-expected second-quarter loss and sales that were lower than expected. The chief executive said order flows bode well for third-quarter revenues, and an analyst said the second quarter "looks like a bottom." [ID:nN03110699]
GOLDMAN SACHS GROUP INC (GS.N)
Bernstein Research upgraded the financial services company to outperform from market perform and raised its price target to $176 from $113. [ID:nWNAB6552]
Shares rose 4.7 percent to $148.88.
APPLE INC (AAPL.O)
Societe Generale started coverage on the company at buy, calling it one of the strongest brands in the consumer electronic industry. [ID:nBNG386177]
Separately, Apple said it would invest up to $1 billion over the next nine years to build a data center in North Carolina. [ID:nN03132336]
Shares rose 1.9 percent to $143.69.
HARTFORD FINANCIAL SERVICES GROUP (HIG.N)
The insurance company's CEO said he would retire by the end of the year. [ID:nN04188920]
Shares fell 1.8 percent to $15.14.
FORD MOTOR CO (F.N)
The auto company's car venture in China sold 48.7 percent more vehicles from a year earlier, its Chinese partner said. [ID:nSHA320235]
Shares rose 2.6 percent to $6.34.
UAL CORP (UAUA.O)
The parent company of United Airlines has asked Boeing (BA.N) and Airbus (EAD.PA) to put forward competing bids for up to 150 new airliners, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. [ID:nBNG175386]
Shares fell 3.6 percent to $5.10.
HALOZYME THERAPEUTICS INC (HALO.O)
The company said it wouldn't further develop its bisphosphonate-PH20 Phase 1 program for osteoporosis based on results of an open-label study. [ID:nBNG337653]
Shares rose 2.5 percent to $7.94.
COLLECTIVE BRANDS INC (PSS.N)
The footwear retailer reported first-quarter earnings that beat expectations but forecast a challenging sales environment in the second quarter. [ID:nBNG489889]
Shares fell 4.3 percent at $15.20.
GEOEYE INC (GEOY.O)
The company said the previously-announced problem with one of its satellites didn't materially impact revenue and that even under the worst case, the impact will be less than 5 percent of projected revenue.[ID:nBNG337693]
Shares rose 1.2 percent at $22.35.
HOT TOPIC INC (HOTT.O)
The company posted a worse-than-expected 6.4 percent drop in May same-store sales, hurt by lower transactions and a fall in average transaction amount. [ID:nBNG318827]
Shares fell 3.6 percent to $7.27.
COMTECH TELECOMMUNICATIONS CORP (CMTL.O)
The telecommunications equipment maker posted quarterly earnings that beat estimates. [ID:nBNG291250]
Shares rose 4.5 percent to $30.59.
ADOLOR CORP (ADLR.O)
The biopharmaceutical company said it was cutting about 28 percent of its workforce and restructuring its discovery group to focus on late-stage, preclinical compounds to lower cash burn. [ID:nBNG318680]
Shares fell 6.6 percent to $2.11.
G-III APPAREL GROUP LTD (GIII.O)
The clothing maker posted a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by strength at its dress and sportswear businesses, and forecast second-quarter revenue slightly above Wall Street estimates. [ID:nBNG465869]
