NEW YORK, July 9 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks on the move on Thursday:
ALCOA INC (AA.N)
The aluminum company late Wednesday reported a second-quarter loss that was narrower than expected, helped by cost-cutting measures. [ID:nN08471164]
Shares of the Dow component gained 4.3 percent to $9.87.
MERCK & CO (MRK.N)
The company bought exclusive rights from Portola Pharmaceuticals to develop and commercialize an oral blood thinner used to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, one of the most common abnormal heart rhythms. [ID:nN09546313]
Shares of the Dow component sank 2.4 percent to $27.40.
CITIGROUP INC (C.N)
The company announced a number of management changes, including the departure of Gary Grittenden, the chairman of Citi Holdings, from the company. [ID:nWNAB5763]
Shares rose 1.9 percent to $2.67.
BROADCOM CORP (BRCM.O)
EMULEX CORP (ELX.N)
Emulex's board rejected Broadcom's sweetened $912 million buyout offer, saying it significantly undervalued the company's long-term prospects. [ID:nN09442370]
Shares of Broadcom rose 3.1 percent to $24.07 while Emulex sank 12 percent to $8.56.
