CHICAGO, Oct 15 (Reuters) - ConAgra Foods Inc (CAG.N) plans to cut the amount of sodium in its food by 20 percent by 2015, joining a list of food companies cutting back on sodium in order to appeal to consumers looking to eat healthier.
The maker of Chef Boy-Ar-Dee pasta and Orville Redenbacher's popcorn said it plans to cut salt in as many as 20 of its brands and 160 different product varieties.
Campbell Soup Co (CPB.N) has been using a reduced-sodium sea salt to cut down on sodium in its soups, while other companies have also been trying to cut back on sodium.
Sodium consumption has been linked to high blood pressure and heart disease, according to the American Heart Association. Much of the sodium in Americans' diets comes from processed food. (Reporting by Brad Dorfman, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
