UPDATE 1-Katanga Mining posts first-quarter loss

TORONTO, May 19 (Reuters) - Katanga Mining Ltd (KAT.TO) posted a first-quarter loss on Tuesday, as it continues to work on ramping-up production and lowering costs.

The copper and cobalt miner, which operates a major mine complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reported a net loss of $52 million, or 25 cents a share.

The company posted a year-ago loss of $17.4 million, or 10 cents a share, according to a prior statement. ($1= $1.16 Canadian) (Reporting by Euan Rocha, editing by Dave Zimmerman)
