Wesfarmers says has no plans to demerge business
SYDNEY, June 23 (Reuters) - Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers Ltd (WES.AX) does not plan to split up its business, a company spokesman said on Tuesday.
"We have no plans for demerger," Mark Triffitt, a spokesman for Wesfarmers told Reuters by telephone.
Speculation about a possible Wesfarmers' demerger gathered momentum after another Australian conglomerate CSR Ltd (CSR.AX) announced plans to spin off its sugar business last week.
The Australian Financial Review newspaper, citing a research report by Merrill Lynch, said on Tuesday that Wesfarmers, which owns the Coles supermarket chain, could be potential demerger candidate. ($1=A$1.28) (Reporting by Denny Thomas)
