LOS ANGELES, Jan 14 (Reuters) - The 404-megawatt Helms Pumped Storage hydropower Unit 1 shut production for planned maintenance, the California Independent System Operator showed in a report on Monday.

No mention was made of when the unit would resume operations.

The plant's owner and operator is Pacific Gas & Electric Co, a subsidiary of PG&E Corp (PCG.N).

The Helms station has three 404-MW units that opened in 1984 and is located east of Fresno in central California.

One MW powers about 700 homes in California. (Reporting by Bernie Woodall, editing by Richard Chang)
