Nikkei tumbles as Tokyo Elec, exporters down
(Updates with opening)
TOKYO, April 14 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average fell more than 2 percent on Monday, with exporters such as Tokyo Electron Ltd (8035.T) hurt by a stronger yen, surprisingly weak earnings from General Electric Co (GE.N) and further evidence that the U.S. is in recession.
As of 0010 GMT, the benchmark Nikkei average .N225 shed 335.24 points to 12,988.49 after opening 1.4 percent lower.
The broader TOPIX index was down 2.8 percent to 1,242.72. (Reporting by Aiko Hayashi)
