UPDATE 1-DemandTec Q1 results beat Wall Street view

July 2 (Reuters) - Software company DemandTec Inc (DMAN.O) narrowed its quarterly loss as it added new U.S.-based retail customers and signed a consumer products manufacturer agreement.

Excluding stock-based compensation and some other expenses, the company earned $996,000, or 3 cents per share, for the first quarter ended May 31, compared with a net loss of $604,000, or 9 cents per share, a year ago.

Net loss for the latest first quarter was $1.0 million, or 4 cents a share, compared with a loss of $1.2 million, or 19 cents a share, a year ago, the provider of software to retailers and consumer products makers said in a statement.

Revenue rose 36 percent to $18.1 million.

Analysts on average had expected earnings of 2 cents a share, before special items, on revenue of $17.6 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

Shares of the San Carlos, California-based company closed down 8 percent at $7.15 on Nasdaq. (Reporting by A.Ananthalakshmi in Bangalore; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
