Drax (DRX.L), Europe's biggest power station, is to invest 100 million pounds in new turbines built by Siemens (SIEGn.DE) in a bid to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by one million tonnes. The company's planned five percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions will be the equivalent of taking 275,000 cars off the road.

EC BACKS BID FOR SCOTTISH POWER

The European Commission yesterday gave the go-ahead to the 12 billion pound takeover of Scottish Power SPW.L by the Spanish utility company Iberdrola (IBE.MC), to create a 64 billion euro European energy giant. The Spanish company, which is still awaiting two final approvals of the takeover in the US, said the deal remained on course to be completed in the second quarter of the year.
