LIMA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Big mines in the south of Peru, a major global metals producer, operated normally on Wednesday after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck across the border in northern Chile, officials said.

Southern Copper's (SPC.LM: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz)(PCU.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) two mines and smelter in Peru were not damaged by the quake, Chief Executive Oscar Gonzalez said.

"Operations were not affected ... there weren't any problems here," he said near the company's Toquepala mine.

Iron ore miner Shougang Hierro Peru's (SHP.LM: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) operations also were not impacted, general manager Raul Vera said.

The sprawling Cerro Verde (CVE.LM: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) copper pit operated normally, a mine official said. (Reporting by Teresa Cespedes and Maria Luisa Palomino; Writing by Terry Wade; editing by Jim Marshall)
