NEW YORK, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Electronics retailer Best Buy Co (BBY.N) plans to offer giveaways and discounts on in-demand items to members of its Rewards Zone program on Sunday night, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday on its Web site.

According to the Journal, membership in the program grew to 24 million from seven million in the past year after the company got rid of the $9.99 yearly fee.

The company previously said it expected a less-aggressive promotional environment heading into the critical second half, when it makes 70 percent of its full-year earnings as the holiday season boosts demand.

Best Buy said it expects between 500 and 1,000 customers to attend its holiday shopping events, the Journal reported.

Representatives from Best Buy could not immediately be reached for comment. (Reporting by Justin Grant; Editing by Quentin Bryar)
