WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Evenflo Co Inc is voluntarily recalling 1 million Discovery Infant Car seats because they could fail to adequately protect children in certain collisions, the U.S. government and the company said on Friday.

Tests conducted by privately held Evenflo and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed there was potential for Discovery Infant seats made between 2005 and 2008 to separate from their base in high-speed side crashes.

Recalled models are 390, 391, 534 and 552. The company said there has been no reports of deaths or serious injury related to Discovery car seats.

Evenflo is providing owners with an free extra fastener to keep the seat in place.

The company plans to introduce enhanced Discovery models this spring.

NHTSA urged owners to immediately check their seats for affected models, however, they were encouraged to keep using them while waiting for the new fastener, which must be ordered by consumers and shipped by mail.
