CHICAGO (Reuters) - Here are some facts about family businesses in the United States:

-- U.S. businesses that are family-controlled: 17 million to 22 million

-- Percent of family businesses that pass successfully to the second generation: 35 percent

-- Percent of family businesses that pass successfully to the third generation: 12 percent

-- Percent of family businesses that pass successfully to the fourth generation: 4 percent

-- U.S. work force employed with a family business: 80 percent
