SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - An inmate was killed and more than 20 injured on Friday in a riot at a federal prison in Three Rivers, Texas.

No guards were hurt and the prison was back under control, the federal Bureau of Prisons said in a statement.

The cause of the fighting which broke out at two housing units in the morning was unknown, the agency said.

"One inmate died as a result of his injuries," the statement said.

"There were no staff injuries and 15 inmates were taken to area medical facilities for treatment of injuries, and seven inmates have been treated for minor injuries at the institution," it said.

The FBI has started an investigation.

The statement did not provide the cause of the inmate's death but area hospitals and local media said that most of the injuries were stab wounds.

Three Rivers is about 80 miles southeast of San Antonio. The prison is a medium security facility for male inmates, according to a federal prison Web site.
