TOKYO, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Japan's monetary base rose 0.9 percent in September from a year earlier, Bank of Japan data showed on Thursday.

Current account deposits at the central bank rose for the first time since February 2006, when they rose 1.3 percent.

A BOJ official said that the central bank's series of money market operations to inject large amounts of funds likely caused the increase last month.

The BOJ has injected trillions of yen on a spot basis since U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers' sudden failure in mid-September roiled money markets.
