NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Jon Hamm, a Golden Globe nominee for the AMC drama "Mad Men," has joined Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in the sci-fi remake "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Hamm will play a NASA official who recruits Connelly's character for the scientific team investigating an alien's arrival on Earth. Reeves plays the alien, who has a simple message: Live in peace or be destroyed.

Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") is directing the Fox update of Robert Wise's 1951 classic. Principal photography began December 12 in Vancouver.

Hamm is up for a Golden Globe as lead actor in a drama for his role on AMC's "Mad Men," which is set in the New York advertising world of the 1960s. The show also earned a nomination for drama series.
