WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A powerful magnitude 6.5 quake hit off Alaska's Aleutian Islands on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but it did not immediately trigger a tsunami warning.

The quake, only 20.5 miles deep, struck at 2204 GMT 31 miles southeast of Nikolski, on Umnak island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue a tsunami warning.
