Georgian tanks attack Tskhinvali-Interfax

MOSCOW, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Georgian tanks on Friday launched an attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia besieged by government troops, Interfax news agency reported.

"At about 3:30 a.m. (2330 GMT on Thursday) a tank attack was launched on the southern outskirts of Tskhinvali," Interfax quoted sepraratist leader Eduard Kokoity as saying. "A heavy battle is under way." (Writing by Oleg Shchedrov; Editing by Richard Balmforth)
