Merkel backs global finance reform summit call

BRUSSELS, Oct 15 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel threw the weight of Europe’s biggest economy on Wednesday behind calls for a summit to reform the global financial system aimed at preventing a repeat of the credit crisis.

“I explicitly support the idea that we should have a meeting this year, preferably in November, of the heads of state and government of the G8 countries and the emerging markets, to rethink the world’s financial system and prevent any repetition of such things,” she told reporters on arrival at an EU summit.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said earlier there was general agreement on holding such a meeting before the end of the year. (reporting by Ilona Wissenbach, writing by Paul Taylor)
