Greek guerrillas say they behind TV shooting

ATHENS, Feb 21 (Reuters) - A Greek guerrilla group called Rebels Sect claimed responsibility on Saturday for a shooting outside a Greek TV station earlier this week, its second attack in less than a month.

There has been an outbreak of left-wing violence since the police shooting of a 15-year-old boy in December sparked Greece's worst riots in decades and rocked the fragile conservative government.

In a statement published in Greek Ta Nea newspaper, the group said it was responsible for the attack outside Alter TV station in southwestern Athens on Tuesday when two hooded gunmen fired dozens of shots outside the station, causing no injuries.

The group said it had targeted journalists because they represented a corrupt establishment and warned them that worse attacks would follow.

"By attacking the channel, we are sending an ultimatum to all journalists," it said.

The statement was found in a CD left on a street in central Athens after an anonymous call to the newspaper, hours before a group of anarchists threw petrol bombs and gas canisters at a Greece's National Bank (NBGr.AT) branch in central Athens.

The raid is the latest in a series of attacks launched after Alexadros Grigoropoulos' killing in December.

Earlier this month, the group claimed responsibility for a gun and grenade raid on an Athens police station.

In January, another leftwing guerrilla group, Revolutionary Struggle, shot and seriously wounded a 21-year-old policeman in a revenge attack for the teenager's shooting.

Earlier this week, there was a failed bomb attack at Citibank's (C.N) headquarters in Athens, while last week unknown arsonists targeted the offices of Greece's anti-terrorism prosecutor, a former minister and a Supreme Court magistrate, causing only minor damage.
