CHICAGO, July 11 (Reuters) - Kmart said on Wednesday that it is adding more than 70 new generic medications to its program that offers a 90-day supply of certain generic drugs for $15, including some not offered under a similar plan at Wal-Mart.

Kmart started offering its discount generic drug plan in May 2006. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT.N), the world's largest retailer, followed with a a highly-publicized $4 monthly plan put in place last fall. Wal-Mart offers a variety of generic drugs for $4 for a monthly supply, and its plan was matched by some competitors.

Kmart said its program now includes 17 different formulations of generic prescription prenatal vitamins, which is a larger variety than other generic programs offer. Kmart also now offers sertraline, which is used to treat depression, and simvastatin, which is used to treat high cholesterol.

Sertraline and simvastatin are not on the list of drugs available for $4 at Wal-Mart.

Kmart is owned by Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD.O).
