US gold ends down on weak technicals, flat dollar

 NEW YORK, Oct 15 (Reuters) - U.S. gold futures ended lower
on Thursday as the dollar stemmed recent losses, and the metal
consolidated gains after a sharp rally to record highs in the
last two sessions.

 GOLD
 * December gold futures GCZ9 settle down $14.10, or 1.3
percent, at $1,050.60 an ounce in COMEX trade.
 * Range from $1,047.40 to $1,066.80. December scaled a
record high $1,072 on Wednesday.
 * Dollar tad lower but halts downward trend, pressures
gold.
 * Oil, which has risen for the past six straight sessions
to almost $78 per barrel, now up for the year.
 * Gold-to-oil ratio breaks below 14. It is at 13.53, down
from previous session's 14.12.
 * Gold's recent rise led by currency worries rather than
inflation.
 * Hedge selling by gold miners and fund profit-taking seen
- RBC's George Gero.
 * Citigroup large credit writedown stokes bank worries.
 * Pullback possible as open interest up 6,565 at 510,752

 * COMEX estimated final volume at 142,809 lots.
 * Spot gold $1,049.70 an ounce at 2:26 p.m. EDT (1826 GMT),
against $1,061.90 late Wednesday in New York.
 * London afternoon gold fix XAUFIX= $1,053.50.
 SILVER
 * December silver SIZ9 ends down 49.3 cents, or 2.8
percent, at $17.415.
 * Profit taking seen after investment-driven rally.
 * Range $17.360 to $18.000.
 * COMEX estimated final volume at 35,713 lots.
 * Spot silver XAG= was at $17.40, versus its previous
finish of $17.85 an ounce.
 * London silver fix XAGFIX= at $17.54 an ounce.
 PLATINUM
 * January platinum PLF0 finishes down $11.10 at $1,355.50
an ounce on broad-based metals weakness.
 * Spot platinum XPT= was at $1,345.50, compared with its
previous finish of $1,358.
 PALLADIUM
 * December palladium PAZ9 closes down $2.65 at $328.15 an
ounce, down with platinum.
 * Spot palladium XPD= was at $324, compared with its
previous session close at $326.50.
