U.S. gold ends tad higher on resurgent dollar

 NEW YORK, Oct 20 (Reuters) - U.S. gold futures cut early
gains to end slightly higher on Tuesday as the dollar turned
higher, denting bullion's status as a hedge against a falling
greenback.

 GOLD
 * December gold futures GCZ9 settled up 50 cents at
$1,058.60 an ounce on the COMEX division of the New York
Mercantile Exchange.
 * Ranged from $1,052.60 to $1,069. December scaled a record
high $1,072 on Oct. 14.
 * Dollar recovers from recent lows as policymakers in
Europe and Asia remarked on the greenback's decline.
 * Investors favor gold for worries that global currency
depreciation could erode the value of paper assets.
 * Prices and volatility of gold options have been falling,
indicating that the underlying gold futures could range-bound -
COMEX floor trader.
 * Gold pressured by weaker oil, which turned lower after
hitting a one-year high.
 * Gold-to-oil ratio below 14 at 13.44, up tad from previous
session's 13.37.
 * COMEX estimated final volume at 113,738 lots.
 * Spot gold XAU= at $1,056.60 an ounce at 2:59 a.m. EDT
(1859 GMT), against $1,062.70 late in New York in the previous
session.
 * London afternoon gold fix XAUFIX= $1,061.75.
 SILVER
 * December silver SIZ9 ended down 6.7 cents at 17.558 an
ounce, down with gold's retreat.
 * Ranged $17.420 to $17.955.
 * COMEX estimated final volume at 25,186 lots.
 * Spot silver XAG= was at $17.53, versus its previous
finish of $17.78 an ounce.
 * London silver fix XAGFIX= at $17.755 an ounce.
 PLATINUM
 * January platinum PLF0 finished down $7.90 at $1,356.30
an ounce, tracking metals' weakness across the board.
 * Spot platinum XPT= was at $1,347, compared with its
previous finish of $1,355.50.
 PALLADIUM
 * December palladium PAZ9 closed up $3.25 at $337.65 an
ounce on strong investment demand.
 * Spot palladium XPD= was at $334.50, compared with its
previous session close at $332.
