Feb 5 (Reuters) - Opnext Inc (OPXT.O), which makes fiber optic network components, posted a wider-than-expected quarterly loss, hurt by a more than 55 percent rise in operating expenses, and forecast fourth-quarter revenue that was below market estimates.
"We are experiencing increased pricing pressure, an unfavorable product mix and the adverse effect of foreign currency exchange fluctuations," Chief Executive Harry Bosco said in a statement.
The company posted a net loss of $14.5 million, or 23 cents a share, compared with a net income of $4.3 million, or 7 cents a share, a year ago.
Revenue was $70.5 million, compared with $66.4 million a year ago.
Excluding items, the company said it posted a loss of 10 cents a share.
Analysts were expecting a loss of a cent a share, before items, on revenue of $77.2 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
For the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue of $80 million to $90 million, which is below analysts' estimates of $94.69 million.
Shares of Eatontown, New Jersey-based company closed at $2.31 on Nasdaq Wednesday.
