Aug 31 (Reuters) - The Medicines Co (MDCO.O) said its anti-clotting drug, Angiomax, improved overall survival in patients who had suffered the most severe form of heart attack and received angioplasty.

The study, which is called the Horizons-AMI, showed that Angiomax reduced cardiac-related death by 43 percent, improved overall survival by 27 percent and reduced major bleeding complications by 39 percent, compared to the standard of care.

Angiomax showed an absolute reduction of 1.7 percent in cardiac-related death and 1.3 percent in all-cause death at one year.

Also, the data collected over a period of one year supported results of previous studies which showed an association between reduced major bleeding in angioplasty patients with greater long-term survival, the company said in a statement.

Shares of the company were up nearly 20 percent at $9.07 in premarket trade. They closed at $7.57 Friday on Nasdaq.
