Feb 19 (Reuters) - West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (WST.N) reported a fourth-quarter profit that topped Wall Street estimates even as revenue fell, and forecast 2009 earnings and revenue below market expectations.

The pharmaceutical packaging components maker said a higher consolidated gross profit margin of 28.4 percent in the quarter partially offset the impact of lower sales.

The company expects sales volume to slow down in the first half of 2009 due to slower discretionary spending on pharmaceutical products and medical services by consumers.

Shares of the company closed at $33.56 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
