TIMELINE - Deadly attacks in Afghanistan in August
(Reuters) - About 2,500 people, including 1,000 civilians, have been killed in fighting between Taliban insurgents and foreign and Afghan forces this year, aid agencies said this month.
An August1 report by a group of 100 aid agencies stated violence in Afghanistan has reached its worst level since 2001, with more than 260 civilians killed in July alone.
Here is a chronology of attacks in Afghanistan in August.
* Aug 1: Two improvised explosive devices (IED) kill five soldiers from NATO-led forces and one civilian in northwest Kunar and eastern Khost provinces, and a suicide bomber kills three civilians in southern Nimroz province.
* Aug 3: Roadside bomb strikes U.S.-led military convoy outside Afghan capital, killing one soldier and wounding another.
* Aug 11: Suicide bomber kills three Afghan civilians and wounds 12 more as he targets convoy of foreign troops on outskirts of Kabul.
-- Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces kill 25 Taliban insurgents and eight civilians after an ambush in southern Uruzgan province.
* Aug 12: Suicide bomb attack kills British soldier in Kabul, and wounds two.
* Aug 13: Three female aid workers and their Afghan driver killed in an ambush by suspected Taliban insurgents. It is the bloodiest single attack on foreign humanitarian workers in Afghanistan in recent years.
* Aug 14: Explosion kills three U.S.-led coalition soldiers while they are on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan. Rocket lands outside international civilian airport in Kabul, no casualties.
* Aug 15: Insurgents kill two soldiers from NATO-led forces in an IED and small-arms attack in eastern Afghanistan.
* Aug 17: Ten police are killed by a roadside bomb in southern Kandahar province.
-- In southern province of Zabul, Afghan soldiers kill 28 Taliban in a clash after the guerillas ambush a convoy carrying supplies for foreign troops.
* Aug 18: Taliban suicide bomber rams an explosives-laden car into gate of the main U.S. military base in Khost, southeastern Afghanistan, killing 10 civilians as the country observed its Independence Day.
* Aug 19: Suspected Taliban insurgents kill 10 French troops and wound 21 in ambush to east of the capital. It is the biggest single loss of foreign forces in Afghan combat since the Tablian's overthrow in 2001, and France's worst military loss in 25 years. French President Sarkozy flies to Kabul to pay his respects.
* Aug 20: Three soldiers from NATO-led force killed in roadside bomb blast in eastern Afghanistan.
