Jupiter CEO sees more corporate "explosions"
BARCELONA (Reuters) - Housebuilders and financial companies are set for more "explosions" similar to Taylor Wimpey's (TW.L) need to raise capital, Jupiter Asset Management Chief Executive Edward Bonham Carter told Reuters.
"There are going to be more explosions, i.e. there are going to be more surprises, i.e. companies that will then find that they have to make writedowns and there's need for more capital. That's going to continue," Bonham Carter said on the sidelines of the Fund Forum 2008 in Barcelona.
"If you're in an operationally geared business exposed to the consumer and your balance sheet is geared, like Taylor Wimpey or Barratt (BDEV.L) ... then the probability of having problems is pretty severe -- i.e. it's a high probability that these businesses are going to need refinancing in some way."
His comments come as Britain's biggest housebuilder Taylor Wimpey lost half its market value after failing to raise the 500 million pounds it said it needed just two days ago.
