The FTSE Small Cap Index .FTSC closes 2.5 percent weaker, just off its low point for the session but outperforming heavier falls from the FTSE 100 Index .FTSE and FTSE 250 index .FTMC, which fall 3.6 and 3.8 percent respectively.
Work Group (WORK.L) tumbles 41 percent following a profit warning. The human resources services company said trading is expected to deteriorate further in the fourth-quarter.
Motive TV (MTVE.L) soars 20 percent after it said its comedy production company Brown Eyed Boy received orders worth more than 1.2 million pounds for three comedy series.

Shares in UTV Media (UTV.L) (UTV.I) jump as much as 22 percent after the Northern Irish broadcaster's two top investors say they have raised their stakes in the group.
Irish investment holding company TVC Holdings Plc (TVCH.I) says it has acquired an additional 3 percent of UTV for 2.2 million pounds, taking its stake to 15 percent. Meanwhile Ireland's Organo Investments, headed up by Racing Post owners Peter Crowley and Neill Hughes, says it has raised its interest to 9.5 percent from the 6.6 percent holding announced in July.
Shares in UTV, which operates the franchise of Britain's ITV (ITV.L) in Northern Ireland, are up 13.4 percent at 93 pence, having earlier traded as high as 100 pence.

European shares remain in extend losses as Wall Street opens lower on growing concerns about global economic growth.
The FTSEurofirst 300 .FTEU3 index of top European shares is down 4.2 percent at 883.4 points, while major U.S. benchmark indexes .DJI .SPX .IXIC trade 2-2.2 percent lower.
Banking shares are the top sectoral losers on the index, with Lloyds TSB (LLOY.L) falling 9.9 percent, HSBC (HSBA.L) slipping 8.1 percent and UBS (UBSN.VX) dropping 7.3 percent.
Miners also drop, with BHP Billiton (BLT.L), Anglo American (AAL.L), Vedanta Resources (VED.L), Lonmin (LMI.L), Kazakhmys (KAZ.L), Xstrata (XTA.L), Antofagasta (ANTO.L) and Rio Tinto (RIO.L) falling between about 7 and 11 percent.
