El Al ups fuel surcharge as oil reaches $60/bbl
JERUSALEM, May 14 (Reuters) - Flag carrier El Al Israel Airlines (ELAL.TA) said on Thursday it was raising fuel surchages by as much as $25 per journey leg, effective May 21, in response to rising global oil prices.
"This week the price of oil surpassed $60 a barrel, an 80 percent rise from its level of $33 in January," El Al said in a statement.
It said fuel charges would rise $5 for short-haul flights, $10 for medium-haul flights -- such as Europe -- and $25 for long-haul flights, except for its new route to Brazil.
The charges will not apply to tickets bought with frequent flier miles.
Last year, El Al hiked fuel charges numerous times when oil reached $145 a barrel. They fell as much as $332 in January when oil prices plunged.
Oil prices dipped below $57 a barrel on Thursday.
