The FTSE Small Cap index .FTSC rise 0.1 percent in midday trade, while the blue chips .FTSE add 1.3 percent and the midcaps .FTMC are 0.9 percent firmer.

Chemicals maker Yule Catto & Co (YULC.L) is the top small cap gainer, up 15 percent, after it says third-quarter performance beat its own estimates, helped by cost control measures, and that it expects full-year underlying pretax profit to substantially exceed 2008. [ID:nBNG493367]

Retailers French Connection (FCCN.L) and Laura Ashley (ALY.L), meanwhile, are big fallers, shedding 8.3 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively, amid caution on the high street ahead of Debenhams' (DEB.L) full-year results on Thursday, with Altium Securities cutting its rating on the department store retailer to "hold" from "buy".
