STOCKS NEWS EUROPE-UK small caps off 1.1 pct at close
The FTSE Small Cap index .FTSC ends 1.1 percent lower, while the midcaps .FTMC fall 1.5 percent, and the blue chips .FTSE close down 1 percent, pressured by early falls on Wall Street.
Volumes on the FTSE Small Cap index are about 63 percent of the 90-day average, while the 90-day daily average volumes for the FTSE 100 and the FTSE 250 are both about 90 percent.
UK Coal (UKC.L) falls 4.5 percent after the company issues a trading update, with Numis Securities increasing its 2009 pretax loss estimate for the firm by 12 million pounds. [ID:nLQ114509]
Urban regeneration specialist MJ Gleeson (GLEG.L) is the biggest small cap riser, up 9.1 percent as its chief executive Chris Holt acquires an initial holding in the company, buying 18,151 shares at 109 pence each.
Gleeson also announces the appointment of Jolyon Harrison as managing director of Gleeson Regeneration & Homes. In its full-year results statement at end-September, the firm said Gleeson Regeneration & Homes was trading poorly due to weak market conditions.
