ROME, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Italy's central bank has written to six of the country's biggest banks urging them to respect internationally agreed rules on bankers' pay and bonuses, it said on Wednesday.

The letter, released by the Bank of Italy press office, was sent to UniCredit (CRDI.MI), Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP.MI), Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI), Mediobanca (MDBI.MI), Banco Popolare (BAPO.MI) and Ubi Banca (UBI.MI).

In the letter, the central bank said: "some shortcomings and delays in the application of the rules on remuneration have emerged."

It called on the banks to ensure "the scrupulous and urgent respect of the rules in the area of governance (regarding remuneration) and the new principles and international standards in this regard." (Reporting by Gavin Jones; Editing by David Holmes)
