Shares in Merck KgaA (MRCG.DE) rise 1.4 percent, making them the top gainers among German largecaps .GDAXI, as traders point to positive statements from U.S. peer Corning Inc (GLW.N) which include an improved second-quarter forecast for its liquid crystal (LCD) operations, where it now sees second-quarter sequential volume rising 100 percent.

"I see a positive read-across for Merck on the figures," says a Frankfurt-based trader.

"The news is good but seems to be in line with comments made last week by Corning," says a Frankfurt-based analyst.
