Two dead after attack on Peru project of Zijin
LIMA, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Two workers were killed during an attack on Sunday at Chinese miner Zijin's Rio Blanco copper project in a remote area of northern Peru, the company's local director, Jian Wu, said on Monday.
The mining development is run by Monterrico Metals MNA.L of Britain, which was bought by Zijin Mining Group (2899.HK) (601899.SS) in 2007.
He said the mining camp was invaded by 15 armed people and that its security guards were fired at.
The attack may have been an act of revenge. In 2005, one protester was killed and two dozen others were tortured when townspeople mobilized to stop construction of the mine, which they said would cause pollution and hurt water supplies.
Meanwhile, Peru's interior minister said several people were missing and that one was killed.
"There's one dead and three people missing," Interior Minister Octavio Salazar said on RPP radio on Monday. (Reporting by Marco Aquino and Patricia Velez; Writing by Dana Ford; Editing by Terry Wade)
