Alliant Techsystems sees upside in Afghan strategy
*US troop surge to aid sales
*CEO selection expected early 2010
ATLANTA, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Bullet maker Alliant Techsystems (ATK.N) said on Thursday it expects the U.S. defense strategy in Afghanistan to boost demand for its products.
The company told a Credit Suisse conference that U.S. President Barack Obama's plans to send 30,000 additional troops into Afghanistan will boost sales of the vests and other tactical accessories it provides for soldiers over the next year.
John Shroyer, interim chief executive, also said that ATK stands to gain more sales from Afghanistan longer-term after U.S. troops pull out and Afghan forces assume more responsibility for the country's security.
"We're in a very good pole position as they get pulled out," Shroyer said. "This Afghan weapons and ammo business, I see, as a huge opportunity for the company as that shift takes place."
Shroyer also said the company's board was reviewing internal and external candidates in its search for a permanent CEO and expects to reach a decision early next year.
Last month, Alliant Techsystems announced that Daniel Murphy would leave as chairman and CEO and retire in March 2010 for personal reasons. The company then said it appointed Shroyer, the finance chief, as interim CEO and board member Ronald Fogleman as chairman, effective immediately.
