NEW YORK, July 9 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks on the move on Thursday:

ALCOA INC (AA.N)

The aluminum company late Wednesday reported a second-quarter loss that was narrower than expected, helped by cost-cutting measures. [ID:nN08471164]

Shares of the Dow component gained 4.3 percent to $9.87.

MERCK & CO (MRK.N)

The company bought exclusive rights from Portola Pharmaceuticals to develop and commercialize an oral blood thinner used to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, one of the most common abnormal heart rhythms. [ID:nN09546313]

Shares of the Dow component sank 2.4 percent to $27.40.

CITIGROUP INC (C.N)

The company announced a number of management changes, including the departure of Gary Grittenden, the chairman of Citi Holdings, from the company. [ID:nWNAB5763]

Shares rose 1.9 percent to $2.67.

BROADCOM CORP (BRCM.O)

EMULEX CORP (ELX.N)

Emulex's board rejected Broadcom's sweetened $912 million buyout offer, saying it significantly undervalued the company's long-term prospects. [ID:nN09442370]

Shares of Broadcom rose 3.1 percent to $24.07 while Emulex sank 12 percent to $8.56.

EMC CORP (EMC.N)

NETAPP INC (NTAP.O)

EMC late Wednesday won the bidding war for Data Domain after rival NetApp Inc (NTAP.O) pulled out, saying it wouldn't match EMC's $2.4 billion bid. [ID:nN08407594]

EMC shares rose 0.8 percent to $12.62 while Data Domain fell 1.4 percent to $33.43 and NetApp rose 1.1 percent to $18.60.

VALIDUS HOLDINGS LTD (VR.N)

FLAGSTONE REINSURANCE HOLDINGS LTD (FSR.N)

IPC has accepted a sweetened $1.65 billion takeover offer from Validus, which beat out Flagstone Reinsurance Holdings Ltd (FSR.N) in a bidding war. [ID:nN09436999]

Shares of IPC were down 1.1 percent at $27.30 while Validus sank 3.6 percent to $21.79 and Flagstone surged 5 percent to $10.22.

MAP PHARMACEUTICALS INC (MAPP.O)

ASTRAZENECA (AZN.N)

MAP Pharma plans to suspend development of its experimental pediatric asthma drug after its licensing partner AstraZeneca terminated a collaboration on the drug. [ID:nBNG491512]

Shares of MAP fell 8.5 percent to $10.12 while AstraZeneca shares were up 0.4 percent to $43.47 on the New York Stock Exchange.

FCSTONE GROUP INC FCSX.O

The company reported adjusted third-quarter earnings that were above expectations. [ID:nBNG313029]

Shares gained 1.83 percent to $3.89.

TARGET CORP (TGT.N)

The retailer reported a drop of 6.2 percent in its June same-store sales, and said it expects its second-quarter earnings performance to meet or exceed the current analyst consensus estimate. [ID:nWNAB5701]

Shares gained 4.1 percent to $38.78.

WALGREEN CO (WAG.N)

The drugstore chain raised its quarterly dividend by 22.2 percent, saying it was confident in its ability to generate strong free cash flow. [ID:nN08411925]

Shares fell 1.9 percent to $29.20.

RIGEL PHARMACEUTICALS INC (RIGL.O)

The company said its lead rheumatoid arthritis drug, R788, showed significant improvement in patients in a mid-stage study. [ID:nBNG491740]

Shares rose 12 percent to $12.51.

AMYLIN PHARMACEUTICALS INC (AMLN.O)

The company said a mid-stage study of its combination obesity product involving versions of hormones linked to appetite and metabolism yielded positive results. [ID:nN09194216]

Shares gained 0.4 percent to $12.34.

GOLDMAN SACHS GROUP INC (GS.N)

Banc of America-Merrill Lynch upgraded Goldman to "buy," writing that the company's earnings power and book value was increasing rapidly. [ID:nBNG489339]

Shares of Goldman rose 1.9 percent to $141.28.

AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL GROUP INC (AIG.N)

Citigroup wrote that there was a high probability that AIG's equity value is zero, given the risk of more credit default swap losses and the management's eagerness to dispose of key businesses at low valuations. [ID:nBNG253944]

Shares sank 11 percent to $11.72.

RESEARCH IN MOTION (RIMM.O) (RIM.TO)

Canaccord Adams upgraded the company to "buy" from "hold," citing the recent slump in the smartphone maker's stock price and a double digit growth in its BlackBerry sales for June. [ID:nBNG347675]

Shares rose 1.4 percent to $66.52.

FIBERNET TELECOM GROUP INC FTGX.O

The company said that RCN Corp had withdrawn its proposal to buy the company. RCN had offered $12.50 per share in cash for FiberNet. [ID:nBNG141190]

Shares of FiberNet fell 8.9 percent to $11.30.

UBS AG (UBS.N) (UBSN.VX)

Investors bet the United States would not go as far as shutting down UBS there in a dispute over tax, instead expecting the Swiss bank to be hit by a hefty fine as part of a swift out-of-court settlement. [ID:nL9200167]

U.S.-listed shares of UBS rose 2.4 percent to $11.81.

COSTCO WHOLESALE CORP (COST.O)

The retailer reported a drop of 6 percent in its June same-store sales, in line with expectations. [ID:nBNG444164]

Shares edged 0.1 percent lower to $45.98.

CHATTEM INC (CHTT.O)

The company reported adjusted second-quarter results that beat expectations. [ID:nBNG18976]

It also gave a full-year revenue outlook. [ID:nWNAB5770]

Shares fell 4.2 percent to $60.31.

VERIGY LTD (VRGY.O)

The semiconductor testing company plans to offer $110 million of convertible senior notes due 2014. [ID:nBNG462047]

Shares fell 12 percent to $9.94.

HOT TOPIC INC (HOTT.O)

The retailer widened its second-quarter loss forecast, citing lower-than-expected sales performance till date, and posted a 7.9 percent fall in June sales at stores open at least a year. [ID:nBNG459228]

Shares fell 2.7 percent to $6.87.

SCANSOURCE INC (SCSC.O)

The technology distributor forecast fourth-quarter sales above Wall Street expectations. [ID:nBNG460726]

Shares rose 8.9 percent to $26.44.
