LOS ANGELES, June 18 (Reuters) - Mirant Corp's (MIR.N) 682-megawatt Unit 7 at the Pittsburg natural gas-fired power station in California was offline on Thursday afternoon, the California Independent System Operator said in a report.

The full unit shutdown was not planned. About 142 megawatts of the unit were offline on Wednesday for planned reasons, the Cal ISO showed.

The 1,311 MW station is in Contra Costa County about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of San Francisco. There are three units at the station: the 312 MW Unit 5, the 317 MW Unit 6 and the 682 MW Unit 7.

The power from Unit 7 is sold to Pacific Gas & Electric Co, a unit of PG&E Corp (PCG.N).

About a third of Unit 5's and Unit 6's capacity was not available to the power grid on Thursday, the Cal ISO showed.

One MW powers about 700 homes in California.

Mirant, of Atlanta, owns and operates more than 10,000 MW of generating capacity and market energy commodities in the United States. (Reporting by Bernie Woodall; Editing by Christian Wiessner)
