FACTBOX-Quotes from Republican candidates' debate

Thu Jan 24, 2008 11:47pm EST

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidates squabbled over the U.S. economy and took shots at Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton on Thursday in a high-stakes debate ahead of the Florida presidential primary election.

Here are some key quotes from the debate:

RUDY GIULIANI, FORMER NEW YORK MAYOR

"This has become a very competitive race. I always expected it to become a very competitive race. ... And we are going to come from behind and surprise everyone. We have them all lulled into a very false sense of security now."

MIKE HUCKABEE, FORMER ARKANSAS GOVERNOR:

"My faith grounds me, it gives me a sense of direction and purpose. I don't try to impose it on other people. And I certainly would never use the auspices of government to try to push my faith. But for me to run from it, impossible. It's who I am. And so if it gives some people a queasy feeling, then they'll have to deal with it."

JOHN MCCAIN, ARIZONA SENATOR:

"If we do what Sen. Clinton said that she wanted to do the night before last, and that's wave the white flag of surrender and set a date for withdrawal, then we will have expenses, my friends, in American blood. Al Qaeda will then have won."

RON PAUL, TEXAS CONGRESSMAN:

"I'm known as the taxpayer's best friend. I have never voted for a tax increase and I voted for the least amount of spending."

MITT ROMNEY, FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR:

"She (Clinton) is exactly what is wrong with Washington. She is Washington to the core. She has been there too long. Bill Clinton has been there too long. The last thing America needs is sending the Clintons back to Washington. Sending the same people back to Washington expecting a different result is not going to get America back on track."
