NEW YORK, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks to watch on Monday

BLACK & DECKER CORP (BDK.N)

The maker of power tools and home-improvement products, said on Monday that quarterly profit nearly doubled on big tax gains. [ID:nWNAS7946]

But shares of Black & Decker fell 7 percent to $65 before the bell on its lower-than-expected outlook. The stock closed at $69.98 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

HALLIBURTON CO (HAL.N)

Oil field services company said its fourth-quarter net profit rose 5 percent, helped by growth in its Eastern Hemisphere business as well as by a lower tax rate. [ID:nN28421441]

Shares closed at 33.09 on the NYSE.

MERCK & CO. (MRK.N)

SCHERING-PLOUGH CORP SGP.N

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed Merck & Co (MRK.N) for documents and information to see whether the companies hid the results of a study on their cholesterol drug, Vytorin.[ID:nN26396256]

Also, UBS raised its recommendation on Merck to "buy" from "neutral," according to theflyonthewall.com. [RCH/US]

Merck shares closed at $47.79 on the NYSE. Schering-Plough closed at $19.02.

SALLIE MAE (SLM.N)

The troubled student lender reached a settlement on Sunday over its scuttled $25 billion buyout, The New York Times reported on Monday. [ID:nN28439106]

Shares closed at $19.88 on the NYSE.

COUNTRYWIDE FINANCIAL CORP CFC.N

The mortgage lender's chief executive, Angelo Mozilo, said on Monday that he would give up $37.5 million in severance pay and other fees he stood to gain from the sale to Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) after criticism over his role in the U.S. mortgage meltdown. [ID:nN28431427]

Shares closed at $6.02 on the NYSE.

KELLWOOD CO KWD.N

The apparel company will remove all barriers to a $21-per-share cash tender offer made by private equity firm Sun Capital Securities Group so that the deal can be concluded if a majority of the shares are tendered, the company said on Sunday. [ID:nWEN3584]

Shares closed at $17.10 on the NYSE.

SPRINT NEXTEL CORP (S.N)

Shares of the No. 3 U.S. mobile service look cheap after losing nearly 30 percent this year, according to financial weekly Barron's in its Jan. 28. edition. [ID:nN27418547]

Shares closed at $9.38 on the NYSE.

SYSTEMAX INC (SYX.N)

Shares of the seller of computer hardware, electronic and industrial products may dip in response to inquiries into the rebate-accounting practices of its TigerDirect retailer, the financial weekly Barron's said in its Jan. 28 edition. [ID:nN27531257]

Shares closed at $15.59 on the NYSE

HELMERICH & PAYNE INC (HP.N)

Shares of the contract driller are poised to climb at least 40 percent, helped by its standard-setting equipment and solid management, Barron's said on Sunday. [ID:nN27418219]

Shares closed at $35.77 on the NYSE.

UNDER ARMOUR INC (UA.N)

Potential rewards outweigh the risks of holding shares of the athletic apparel maker, according to Barron's.

If the company's move into non-cleated footwear is a success, the shares could trade in the low-$40s within a year, the financial weekly said in its Jan. 28 edition. [ID:nN27419352]

Shares closed at $34.87 on the NYSE.
