SHANGHAI, Aug 25 (Reuters) - China's metal smelters have started to announce
production details for the first half of 2009, with more expected this month.
Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (Chalco) (2600.HK)(601600.SS), the world's No. 3
alumina producer and China's top aluminium producer, said on Tuesday its alumina
output in the first half tumbled 31.6 percent to 3.2 million tonnes.
Chalco produced 1.61 million tonnes of aluminium, up 5.9 percent from a year
earlier, the company said in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
Chalco expected its 2009 alumina output to fall 11 percent from a year
earlier to 8 million tonnes, and its aluminium output to rise 5 percent.

Jiangxi Copper Co (0358.HK)(600362.SS), China's top integrated copper
producer, said its copper cathode output in the first half of the year rose 1.37
percent from a year earlier.
Jiangxi Copper expects the global economy to recover slowly, pushing up
copper demand. As the dollar is likely to remain weak and the possibility of
inflation grows due to excessive liquidity, copper prices are unlikely to fall
deeply, the company said in its interim report.
The list shows smelters that have already reported output figures, in
tonnes, and those that are expected to announce production details soon.

New security restrictions could hurt airlines

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tighter security measures at U.S. airports following an attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound jet could dampen enthusiasm for air travel, hurting the airline industry just as it seemed poised to recover from a period of bruising losses, some industry experts say.
