Ballesteros wants to play at St Andrews next year
TURNBERRY (Reuters) - Seve Ballesteros, continuing his recovery from four operations to remove a brain tumor, is back playing golf and keen to compete in the 2010 British Open at St Andrews.
"I would like to go and play for them (the British public) at St Andrews next year," he told the Marca newspaper. "It's a target which I would like to turn into reality."
Open organizers the R&A welcomed the announcement from the five-times major champion.
"It would be absolutely fantastic if Seve could make it," said R&A director of championships David Hill.
"He would be made very welcome by everyone at St Andrews and of course by the R&A."
Ballesteros, 52, who was diagnosed with the tumor after collapsing last October, says he has recently played some nine-hole rounds with his family.
The charismatic Spaniard won the British Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988, and the U.S. Masters in 1980 and 1983.
