HDMI Continues to Grow as Digital Connection Standard; New and Innovative
Features Introduced as Differentiators at CES 2008
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 2008 International Consumer
Electronics Show (CES), HDMI Licensing, LLC, the agent responsible for
licensing the High-Definition Multimedia Interface(TM) (HDMI(TM))
specification, today announced that more than 750 consumer electronics (CE)
and personal computer (PC) manufacturers have adopted the HDMI specification,
up from 574 adopters one year ago. The continuing adoption of the HDMI
specification by manufacturers further strengthens its position as the
worldwide standard for high-definition digital connectivity. A wide array of
new products are coming to market at CES 2008 using the most advanced HDMI
1.3-enabled features, such as x.v.Color, Deep Color and the newest lossless HD
audio formats from Dolby and DTS. HDMI is also expanding into new product
categories.
"We are pleased to see such rapid and pervasive adoption of the HDMI
standard," said Leslie Chard, president of HDMI Licensing. "With over 750
adopters, and the rapid adoption of HDMI 1.3-enabled features in products at
this year's CES, HDMI is no longer an option but has become a "must have"
element of every home theater."
HDMI is the leader in digital connectivity for high-definition consumer
electronics from entry-level devices to high-end home theater systems,
including TVs, set-top boxes, DVD players and A/V receivers. In addition, the
HDMI specification is experiencing rapid growth in the game console, digital
still camera, camcorder, portable media player and PC markets, as
manufacturers meet consumer demand for multimedia convergence. Sony, Canon,
Panasonic, Hitachi, JVC, Toshiba and Sanyo have announced or are shipping HD
camcorders featuring HDMI technology. Nikon, Sony and Samsung have already
released digital still cameras containing HDMI technology. In addition, OQO is
shipping an ultra-mobile PC using integrated HDMI technology in its graphics
processor further demonstrating the proliferation of HDMI into new portable
consumer electronics product categories.
Over 229 million devices incorporating HDMI are expected to ship in 2008,
with an installed base of nearly 1.2 billion HDMI-enabled devices projected by
2010, according to market researcher In-Stat.
"We've revised our projected number of HDMI-enabled products to ship in
2008 upwards to just over 229 million," said Brian O'Rourke, principal analyst
for In-Stat. "HDMI continues to dominate the market as it moves from a new
technology to a standard part of today's home theater system."
"With the expansion of HDMI beyond core home theater products to PCs, game
consoles, digital cameras and portable media players, HDMI continues to
dominate the market," said Leslie Chard, president of HDMI Licensing. "The
rapid increase of adoption of the HDMI specification, proliferation of
HDMI-enabled devices in the marketplace and increasing consumer awareness at
the retail level demonstrates that HDMI is the leader in digital
connectivity."
