Holistic Management International Awarded New USAID Funding To Address Drought Disaster in Zimbabwe
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--(Business Wire)--Peter Holter, executive director of the Albuquerque-based
non-profit Holistic Management International, announced today that HMI
has been awarded new funding for $329,750 from the U.S. Agency for
International Development's (USAID's) Office of Foreign Disaster
Assistance for a project that addresses the drought disaster in
Zimbabwe, which has been exacerbated by the country's economic
collapse.
HMI and its Africa Centre for Holistic Management originally
launched the program in 2005 with pilot projects in two villages. The
new funding will help HMI provide immediate relief to two neighboring
villages by:
-- Supplying adequate water for livestock;
-- Using the herds to improve the crop fields prior to the coming
of seasonal rains;
-- Planting gardens (by and for HIV/AIDS support groups);
-- Training community animal health workers; and -
-- Creating a self-sustaining veterinary supply store housed at
the Africa Centre's Dimbangombe Ranch headquarters.
"We are grateful to USAID for their support of this work and their
confidence in our staff, who are deeply committed to turning around a
desperate situation," Holter said.
Since 1983, HMI has worked on four continents with stewards of
large land holdings (farmers, ranchers, government agencies and other
non-profits) to restore the land to health and profitability.
The U.S. Agency for International Development administers the U.S.
foreign assistance program, providing economic and humanitarian
assistance in more than 120 countries worldwide.
