Research and Markets: IPTV Market Leaders Report 2009 Edition 2

Fri Nov 6, 2009 6:41am EST
DUBLIN--(Business Wire)--
Research and Markets
(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/64c7f0/iptv_market_leader) has
announced the addition of the "IPTV Market Leaders Report 2009 Edition 2" report
to their offering.

Ranking

This IPTV Market Leader Report (MLR) identifies which IPTV systems and software
companies are leading each of the six IPTV market segments: Access, Video
Headend (VHE), Video-on-Demand Server Software (VOD), Middleware (MW), Set-top
Box (STB), and Content Protection/Digital Rights Management (CP/DRM). Over 100
vendors are identified and tracked for this report. The MLR includes a breakdown
of Asian, European, North American (NA), and Rest of the World (ROW) regions, as
well as overall global leaders. Market positions are measured by tracking actual
numbers of active IPTV subscribers that are using (or being supported by) each
company's products. Subscriber numbers are gathered and broken down by IPTV
sector and regional segment, resulting in rankings.

At the core of the data is the number of IPTV subscribers for each Service
Provider. A combination of primary and secondary research methods are used to
gather data for this report, including official company press releases and
briefings with IPTV Operators and vendors. In-depth primary research is
conducted by surveying IPTV vendors and verifying their customers and
deployments around the world. Additionally, subscriber counts are verified by
triangulating data from multiple vendors, using a top-down and bottom-up
approach. Although many IPTV vendors are verified as possible on any given IPTV
deployment, there are still a small number of IPTV vendors that have not been
identified. Once data about each Provider's subscriber numbers is gathered, it
is allocated to its vendors in each product category. The data gathered is then
separated into rankings for five of the IPTV product categories, within the four
regions and globally.

The one exception is the Video Headend category, where market positions are
based on the reported number of IPTV (Broadcast) channels provided (rather than
subscribers) using each company's products. Since a Video Headend may support
two thousand or two million subscribers, the number of channels is a much better
measure of a company's market position.

Overall, since these rankings are based on actual live IPTV subscribers, they
provide a good measure of each vendor's current market position and ranking, as
well as their future growth prospects.

Growth Prospects

In addition, the growth prospects for each company is rated based on the number
of large IPTV service deployments the company is participating in. Included are
tables that count each vendor's significant deployments, both globally and
within each region. A significant deployment is one that has been announced and
is expected to be one of the world's top 25 systems by number of IPTV
subscribers forecasted for 2013.

Executive Summary:

Global IPTV Market Leaders Report Tracks New Growth Both Large and Small Vendors
Survive in Rising Markets

The author announces new leaders in the Global IPTV Market Leaders Report -
October 2009 (MLR), which tracks the top 120 IPTV vendors in 24 regional sectors
based on the installed base of 6 video systems products in over 800 IPTV
Operations. Over 80 new Operators have begun IPTV since March 2009, most of
those in North America, Europe and the Rest of World regions, totaling over 800
IPTV Operators worldwide. Several large companies, and a few smaller ones,
continue to consolidate their leading market positions, including
Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, Verimatrix, Viaccess, Microsoft, Ericsson/TANDBERG and
others.

In the IPTV Access sector, Alcatel-Lucent (A-L) breaks the record by acquiring
51% share of the worldwide (Access) market, while maintaining its #1 market
ranking worldwide for several years. Also furthering its strength as a System
Integrator (SI) is A-L's dominant #2 position in the Middleware sector, in
addition to its continued success as IPTV System Integrator for AT&T.

In the Content Security sector, Verimatrix retains its #1 global market ranking,
enjoying a 26% share of the global market, up 2% since March 2009. With solid
leadership positions in all 4 of the regional markets, Verimatrix continues to
light the pathway for other smaller vendors wanting to succeed in their product
category.

In Set-top Boxes, Motorola still dominates the global market, with 28% share
globally-a 5% increase since March 2009-followed by smaller and highly
aggressive companies like Amino, ADB and Netgem. Over 25 companies continue to
compete in this high-stakes market, which often represents over 60% of CapEx for
IPTV operations.

In Video Headend Encoders, Motorola also maintains its #1 global ranking with
38% share of market, with Ericsson/TANDBERG having a strong second showing of
34%. This is a hotly contested sector where the top 5 vendors hold about 94% of
the global share, leaving only 6% to the 6 other competitors. In both the
Middleware and Video-on-Demand (VOD) sectors, companies continue to struggle to
hold their own against the Microsoft juggernaut. So far, Espial and SeaChange
and a few others are seeing some growth based mostly on growth of existing
customers.

"Significant growth of China's IPTV subscribers enabled both Huawei and ZTE to
improve their rankings in several sectors," says Jose Alvear, MRG Analyst.
"These grew out of new developments at China Telecom and China Unicom as they
expanded into different provinces, often with different configurations of video
systems products."

"Mergers and partnerships will continue to develop as vendors help IPTV
Operators develop new converged services and content," states Gary Schultz, MRG
President. "We believe smaller/better/faster technology will enable application
developers to exploit the advantages of the IPTV architecture for decades to
come."
