Switzerland Has an Advanced Pharmaceutical Market and Per-Capita Expenditure Is Among the Highest in the World at an Estimated US$743.4 in 2006

DUBLIN, Ireland--(Business Wire)--
Research and Markets
(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c85987) has announced the
addition of Switzerland Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q1 2008 to
their offering.

The Switzerland Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report provides
independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Switzerland's
pharmaceuticals and healthcare industry.

Switzerland has an advanced pharmaceutical market and per-capita
expenditure is among the highest in the world at an estimated US$743.4
in 2006. Consumption centres around patented pharmaceuticals, with
Switzerland providing a ready market for cutting-edge therapies.
Meanwhile, high-levels of out-of-pocket expenditure have resulted in
the development of a mature and competitive consumer health sector.
Overall market growth should expand at a CAGR of 5.73% over the
forecast period to reach a value of US$7.69bn.

In the latest quarter, most market activity has been centred
around the major domestic players, with Novartis having an especially
busy few months. The multinational has recently announced
restructuring plans involving shedding 2,500 jobs, or 2.5% of its
workforce, as it hopes to achieve savings of US$1.6bn a year until
2010. Meanwhile, Sandoz, Novartis' generics arm, has announced that it
is to launch a generic version of biotech anaemia treatment epoetin
alfa (EPO), the primary ingredient in US-based Amgens blockbuster
Epogen. The author views the launch as a major step forward for the
rapidly growing biosimilars industry.

In terms of M&A activity, the major deal saw Swiss pharmaceutical
producer and wholesaler Galenica acquire Canadian biotech Aspreva in a
deal worth US$900mn. The purchase is one of the largest ever in the
Canadian pharmaceutical sector and has provided a ringing endorsement
for Canada's biotech industry, often criticised as a difficult
environment to work in, while also highlighting the continual interest
of the major Swiss players in snapping up biotech assets.

Meanwhile, Switzerland takes first place in the author's revised
Business Environment Rankings for the Western European region. We have
completely overhauled the methodology giving greater weight to
regulatory factors affecting the drug market, while utilising a more
nuanced analysis of country-specific economic and political factors.
Switzerland's position derives mainly from its excellent regulatory
system and high per-capita expenditure.
