U.S. Versus France Davis Cup Tennis Coverage on The Topspin Blog

Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:40am EDT
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Topspin Blog, a new site
launching today at www.topspinblog.com, will be covering the U.S. versus
France Davis Cup tennis matches running Friday through Sunday.
The Topspin Blog throughout the year will offer readers news, essays and
on-site commentary about U.S. Davis Cup matches, the U.S. Open, as well as
other tennis features.
This weekend's Davis Cup quarterfinal matches in the Joel Coliseum in
Winston-Salem will feature Andy Roddick, who last week beat Roger Federer for
the first time in almost five years, and James Blake and twin brothers Bob and
Mike Bryan for the U.S. The French lineup includes Australian Open finalist
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Wimbledon semifinalist Richard Gasquet and Paul Henri-
Mathieu. Patrick McEnroe is captain of the U.S. team, and Guy Forget manages
the French.
The two countries are deadlocked 7-7 in team matches dating back to 1903,
and the French have won only once on American soil. That win was in 1927 when
the team of the famed Four Musketeers- including Rene "The Crocodile" Lacoste
and Henri Cochet-defeated a team led by Bill Tilden at the Germantown Cricket
Club in Philadelphia. The French won the last meeting between the two teams
in Paris in 2002 at Roland Garros, home of the French Open.
The USTA will honor the American team, winners of the 2007 Davis Cup over
Russia in last year's final, in a ceremony on court before play begins Friday.
The winner in Winston-Salem will meet the winner of Spain and Germany,
scheduled to play in Bremen, Germany. Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and
Feliciano Lopez are on the Spanish team, and Philip Kohlshreiber and Nicolas
Keifer lead the Germans. The Davis Cup semifinal matches are scheduled for
late September.
