with Unique 'Innovative Model of Living'
Press preview July 29, 2 p.m.

MCLEAN, Va., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Here's what happens when you take one
of the nation's most innovative retirement communities and pair it up with a
top-notch designer. You get a glimpse into the future of retirement living.
A suite at Vinson Hall Retirement Community (VHRC) in McLean, VA, has been
transformed into an Innovative Model of Living (IML), an apartment that looks
and behaves more like an upscale hotel room than a retirement unit. It is a
collaboration between VHRC and design expert Moira Leite of M. Quinn Designs.
She partnered with more than two-dozen vendors who supplied products and
concepts.
Here are only a few of the features:
-- Nine different colors of lighting, each chosen for its ability to aid
people with vision impairments.
-- A contiguous "channeling kitchen," so residents can move heavy objects
without lifting.
-- A garbage can that opens with a wave of the hand.
-- Colors chosen to ensure different parts of the unit can be easily
distinguished by someone with visual impairment.
-- Window shades that open by remote control
-- Power-lift easy chairs for easy access
-- AFrame Digital, Inc. will pilot a watch-like device that tracks
resident's whereabouts, detects impact in case of a fall, and monitors vital
signs. AFrame has won awards from the National Institute on Aging and DARPA
for its technology.
Rear Admiral Kathleen Martin (Ret), CEO of VHRC, said, "The IML comes as a
direct response to a clear message from VHRC residents that they want a living
environment that allows them to age in place, prolonging their independence
and quality of life."
Moira Leite said, "The IML is an excellent example of what can happen when
every detail for comfort, safety and aesthetics is considered in building a
modern living space for seniors."
About Vinson Hall Retirement Community (VHRC)
