Neil Getnick Receives the Exemplary Public Service Award from Cornell Law School for Work on Whistleblower Cases
Getnick & Getnick LLP is pleased to announce that Neil Getnick has received the Alumni Exemplary Public Service Award from Cornell Law School. Mr. Getnick, the managing partner of Getnick & Getnick, accepted the award at a ceremony at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York on Friday evening.
The award is given annually to Cornell Law alumni to recognize outstanding public service through work with a public interest organization, government agency, or law firm pro bono project. Mr. Getnick, who graduated from Cornell Law in 1978, was one of 10 recipients this year.
The award is rarely given to lawyers from commercial law firms, but Mr. Getnick has established an unusual practice as a national leader in anti-fraud litigation and business integrity matters. He is the chairman of Taxpayers Against Fraud, a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to combating fraud against federal and state governments through the promotion and use of federal and state false claim acts and whistleblower laws. He has handled many of the nation’s largest whistleblower cases, including a case against Glaxo Smith Kline that settled in 2010 and resulted in GSK paying the federal government $750 million and Mr. Getnick’s client Cheryl Eckard receiving $96 million from the federal government, the largest recovery for a single whistleblower in U.S. history. Mr. Getnick’s many other anti-fraud efforts include serving, together with his law firm, as an integrity monitor for the World Trade Center disaster clean-up, later evaluated by a Congressional oversight committee as a “best practice” to be emulated in the future.
“I very much appreciate that Cornell Law School recognizes the important role the False Claims Act and whistleblower laws are playing in combating fraud throughout the country,” Mr. Getnick said. “The federal False Claims Act is succeeding beyond anybody’s wildest dreams – with $30 billion recovered in the first 25 years and a record $3 billion recovered last year. We are on track this year to far exceed last year’s record.”
The U.S. Department of Justice celebrated the 25th anniversary of the federal False Claims Act at an event in Washington, DC last month which included a panel discussion featuring Mr. Getnick.
