Crowell & Moring to Open San Francisco Office and Gain 29 Litigators From
Folger Levin & Kahn
WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased
to announce that it will open a San Francisco office and gain 29 lawyers from
the litigation powerhouse of Folger Levin & Kahn LLP (FLK). The firms have
agreed to join together in December, adding a team of highly regarded trial
lawyers, including nine partners, to Crowell & Moring's Litigation Group. The
move will provide enhanced trial capabilities in San Francisco and Los
Angeles, where Crowell & Moring has long served clients in matters ranging
from climate change litigation to antitrust and consumer class action matters.
"Many of our top clients are located in the Bay area, and our new lawyers
provide them an instant bench of leading litigators and trial lawyers who have
proven themselves on the toughest cases involving a wide range of federal and
state court matters. Folger Levin & Kahn has been an icon in San Francisco for
over 30 years, and now our clients will benefit from their demonstrated
experience and longstanding presence in the community," said Crowell & Moring
Chairman Kent A. Gardiner.
San Francisco will become Crowell & Moring's third California office. The firm
opened in Orange County in 1991 and last year launched a Los Angeles office
with the white collar & securities litigation lawyers from Lightfoot
Vandevelde Sadowsky Crouchley Rutherford & Levine LLP. The new Crowell &
Moring lawyers from FLK will include nine partners, three senior counsel, one
counsel, and 16 associates. Of those, the majority will be based in San
Francisco. Four lawyers, including one partner, will be based in Los Angeles.
A group of 15 FLK lawyers will form a new firm, Folger Levin LLP, which will
have four practice groups: estates and trusts, corporate and real estate,
litigation, and labor and employment.
Gregory D. Call, who will head the San Francisco office and become the San
Francisco region chair of Crowell & Moring's Litigation Group, said, "Crowell
& Moring offers a sophisticated bench of premier, international capabilities
in areas ranging from antitrust to complex litigation to government contracts.
We're also gaining tremendous strength in venues such as Washington, New York,
and Europe, where we can offer clients the breadth and the reach they need.
The most important factor, though, is that we like the people at Crowell &
Moring."
FLK's high profile litigation work has included successfully representing
PeopleSoft, Inc. in its California state court case against Oracle Corporation
alleging unfair competition and interference with contracts related to
Oracle's tender offer; serving as lead trial counsel for more than 100
defendants including some of the largest corporations in America in U.S. v.
Stringfellow, one of the largest environmental cases in U.S. history; and
serving as lead counsel for the California cities who selected "Option B" in
the Orange County bankruptcy, the so-called "Killer Bs" case.
In addition to its high profile litigation work, FLK partners serve as leaders
in the community, including as National Chair of the Stanford Law Society,
Vice Chair of the Bar Association of San Francisco's Appellate Practice
Section, and member of the Salvation Army's San Francisco Metro Advisory
Board, among others. In 2009, for the third consecutive year, FLK was named
one of the "50 Best Law Firms for Women" by Working Mother magazine.
"We never thought an international firm could share our same spirit and values
until we sat down with Crowell & Moring. Now we have found a team of
like-minded colleagues who believe as we do that the client comes first,
people matter most, and partnership is a way of life," said name FLK partner
Michael A. Kahn. In addition to Kahn's client work, he has been involved in
the selection of candidates for the bench for two California governors and one
U.S. senator, and he also served as chair of the California ISO, a public
benefit corporation that operates much of the state's electricity transmission
grid.
New Crowell & Moring partners will include Call, Thomas F. Koegel, M. Kay
Martin, Beatrice B. Nguyen, Karen Jensen Petrulakis, Jennifer S. Romano, Ethan
P. Schulman, J. Daniel Sharp, and Douglas W. Sullivan. Senior counsel will
include Michael A. Kahn, Michael F. Kelleher, and Janine L. Scancarelli.
Crowell & Moring will maintain the FLK office space when it opens at 275
Battery Street in San Francisco.
